Chickens
Chickens were used for eggs and for meat. The feathers could be used to make corn cob darts or for bedding in one's mattress. Hens begin laying when they are about 5 or 6 months old and are called pullets until they lay. Hens sit on their eggs 21 days until they hatch the chicks. The first eggs are small and may not contain a yolk.

Quick Facts - Brief History - Resources

Quick Facts:

The female chicken is called a hen, the male a rooster, and baby chickens are called chicks. Chickens eat grains, cracked corn, bugs, grass, forage, and oyster shells.

Fun Facts:
You can hypnotize a chicken by holding it on its side while drawing a line in the dirt next to its head.
Some folks used to clean their chimney by dropping live chickens down them (don't try this at home!). (Using a christmas tree is less traumatic to all concerned.)
